Training a Puppy

Puppies are prepared to learn whatever we want to teach them. Since dogs are social animals, they have a high capacity for learning.

Socialize Your Puppy

Expose your puppy to many new positive experiences.

Let him play with a variety of toys

Let him meet a variety of new people of all ages and sexes

After your puppy has his vaccinations, let him meet and play with friendly dogs

Get him out for walks to experience different surfaces and smells

Crates and Portable Kennels

Get a crate!

It is not a punishment; every dog needs a place that is his own.

Get a large enough crate for him to use as an adult

Having your dog crate-trained makes it easier to take him with you when you travel, or if you have to evacuate in case of a disaster.

House Breaking

Puppies need a routine. Feed him at the same time every day.

DO NOT FREE-FEED YOUR PUPPY!

When the puppy is not supervised, he should be in his crate with his toys.

SAMPLE HOUSE TRAINING ROUTINE

 night.

If you bought an adult sized crate, use a piece of

wood (some wire crates come with a divider) and make it

just large enough for him to lie down and turn around.

Move the divider as he grows.

DO NOT LEAVE A COLLAR ON A DOG OR PUPPY

IN THE CRATE.

Puppies need to eliminate after:

Eating

Drinking

Sleeping

Playing

Constant supervision and a consistent routine is the secret

to successful housebreaking!

If your puppy eliminates in the house and you

“catch him in the act”, say “NO” and hustle him outside

immediately. Praise when he eliminates outside.

I don’t give my puppies water after 7:00 PM.

With the younger pups, they may have to go out during

the night, but usually by 10 weeks they sleep through.

Puppies need to be let out in the middle of the day until

they are about 6 months old.

Don’t ask him to “hold it” all day!

He can’t and he should be getting a mid-day feeding until

he is about 4 months old.
